Since 1820, Hwie Tiauw Ka Association has become the knot that united the Hakka people in Surabaya, Indonesia. We had a humble beginning as a vessel for Chinese settlers that came in the 19th century. From then on, our goal and bond have stood firmly across the generations.

Reformation era reopens space for Chinese communities. Hwie Tiauw Ka begins to hold public events, like cultural festivals and seminars.

During the New Order era, limited to internal welfare activities only.
1959
The Association adjusts to the ruled President of the Republic of Indonesia‘s Decree, starting with the use of Indonesian language in official documents.
1920
The colonial government recognizes the Association as an organized Chinese ethnic society.
1908
The building was built in Surabaya’s Chinatown area. Becoming an ancestral worship place and gathering site.
1820
The Chinese Hakka immigrants hosted warm, friendly gatherings at Slompretan Street, Surabaya — later named Hwie Tiauw Ka.
